Guatemala Campamento Alto
Our latest Direct Trade project features an ONYX x XELA collaboration from Guatemala.
Campamento Alto is a single farm micro-lot from the Hoja Blanca region of Huehuetenango in Guatemala, and it is produced by Aurelio Villatoro.
Coffee cherry picking is monitored very closely at Hoja Blanca, producing a super sweet and unique profile. Picking standards include selecting only perfectly ripe cherries, avoiding green, dry and damaged fruit.
After picking, de-pulping is done as it is sent to concrete tanks to ferment for 36 hours, imparting a burst of dried fruit intensity and super clear flavors. The coffee is then washed and dried for up to 7 days on patios.
The winding road that leads to Aurelio Villatoro’s door is surrounded by coffee farms, but the journey is worth it. Hoja Blanca is the frontier of Cuilco in western Huehuetenango, (Mexico visible barely a kilometer away.) The vertical land in this high valley is dotted with award winning lots from the family.
The care and thought put into nurturing/processing this coffee imparts an intense honey sweetness, dried fruit tones, and a velvet mouthfeel with a lasting vibrant finish.
